Christmas caroling is a fun annual activity many people enjoy that can assume various shapes. Caroling can be performed inside or outside, formally or casually. It can involve professional singers or a marginally talented group of friends hoping to spread some Christmas cheer. It can be extensively organized and promoted or it can be done spontaneously.

Regardless of the format, though, Christmas caroling has the potential to infuse joy into the carolers and hearers alike. If you or your group are planning to go caroling this Christmas season, here are five potential destinations to consider:

Homes in a specific neighborhood.

This is perhaps the most traditional view of caroling. Usually involving a small group of people, the carolers go from house to house throughout a community, knock on doors, and begin singing as the residents come to answer. After a song or two, the carolers move on to the next home.

Nursing homes or hospitals.

Contact the administrator(s) to inquire about the possibility of your group visiting to sing for residents. Such locations are usually open to such offers, as long as there is room in their calendar of events. Typically, you will be permitted to sing in a common area while interacting with the residents.

Community halls or churches.

Turn your caroling into a community event by hanging posters and distributing flyers. Invite the entire neighborhood to converge at the designated location to enjoy the songs of the season. Your group can either perform for the audience or invite them to join in singing the carols.

Local parks.

Weather permitting, a park within a particular neighborhood can provide a reasonable alternative to meeting in a community hall or church. Again, posters and flyers can be distributed to advertise the event. Depending on your requirements, you may also need to arrange for lighting and a power source.

Shopping centers.

Contact the manager of your local mall to ask about having your group sing there, either in a designated courtyard or while roaming throughout the mall. Be aware, though, that there may be mall policies or insurance issues that must be addressed. As a variation, consider caroling at various businesses in a downtown sector.

Once you have made the necessary arrangements for your location(s), confirmed your participants, and secured enough carol sheets, you're ready to go. Enjoy the experience and the opportunity to share the joy of Christmas.
