The summer season is almost upon us, and it should be a time of family fun and relaxation. Unfortunately, for many families the summer season is anything but relaxing, with a never-ending string of expenses and costly getaways.
It does not have to be that way. There are plenty of low cost ways to enjoy the long hot days of summer and keep your family entertained. From an old-fashioned bike ride around the neighborhood to a homemade water park in your back yard, there are lots of ways to cool off this summer. Here are a few of our favorites:
Take a bike ride.
The summer is a great time to take a relaxing bike ride. Whether you ride your bike at the beach while on vacation or just take to the local bike trail, you can enjoy a leisurely ride and a wonderful day in the sunshine.
Set up your own backyard water park.
Do you have an old hose that has seen better days? If so, turn it into a backyard sprinkler for those hot summer days. Just poke holes in the hose, hook it up and enjoy a cool spray of water as you and the kids frolic in the grass.
Host a potluck barbecue.
If you want to enjoy a hearty meal without the expense, consider a potluck barbecue. Everyone brings their favorite dish, and the recipe that goes with it. At the end of summer you can give everyone who attended their own recipe book and a hearty thank you.
Spend a day lounging in the sun.
There is nothing more relaxing that lounging in the sun or lying in the hammock on the hottest day of the year. So grab your sunscreen, your beach towel and your favorite book and see what summer is all about.
Take up yoga and meditation.
If you want to relax and unwind this summer, taking a yoga class and learning to meditate is a great idea. There is nothing like striking a yoga pose in the warm sunshine, and you can continue your relaxing meditative ways long after the last rays of summer are gone.
Enjoy a cool drink.
Nothing beats a big pitcher of homemade lemonade on a hot day, so whip up a gallon and keep in on hand.
Watch the sunset.
The summer season features some of the most spectacular colors nature has to offer. Take the time to enjoy the sunset from your front porch - you will feel better and more relaxed.
Unplug from the world.
If you want to truly relax this summer, break your Facebook and email obsession, put your smartphone away and unplug. You will be surprised how relaxing the world is disconnected from all those electronic devices.
Get plenty of sleep.
The days are longer and there is more sunshine, but that does not mean you can afford to sleep less in the summer. Get plenty of sleep so you can wake up relaxed, refreshed and ready for a day of fun in the sun.
Watch a summer thunderstorm.
Summer is a time for storms, and the sights can be truly spectacular. Find a safe spot to observe the storm, like your front porch or living room, and watch the beauty and drama of Mother Nature on display.
The summer season should be a time of rest and relaxation, not stress and financial deprivation. The fun and frugal tips listed above can help you enjoy the season more and get more out of life in the summer sun.
